Approaches

Here we provide you with ideas for different approaches.

We define Move & Learn approaches as:

“Part of a learning sequence that directly or indirectly incorporates an appropriate type of physical activity to enhance the learner’s development.”

Remember, it’s as much about learning as it is about movement. As we discuss in our training and book, to make learning purposeful you need to consider whether to incorporate movement through activators and/or energisers.

Click on View Activators or View Energisers below to see our different approaches. You can also add your own idea to share with our online community for an Activator or Energiser if you have one.

Move & Learn Activators
Move & Learn Energisers
Direct Purpose

Movement can be used to directly activate learning
in the following ways:

  • Retrieval of previous Knowledge
  • Collection of new knowledge
  • Modelling of new knowledge, skills & understanding
  • Connection of own & others ideas
  • Creation of something new
InDirect Purpose

Movement breaks can be used to indirectly
energise & support learning by:

  • Reducing sedentary time
  • Allowing learners to re-focus & therefore increase overall time on task
  • Break up complex learning into ‘mini’ lessons

About Us

Bryn Llewellyn

Bryn worked in various UK schools for 25 years as a Teacher, Deputy Head and Acting Head Teacher. In 2012, he founded Tagtiv8. His pioneering approach to physically active learning (Move & Learn) not only provides an enjoyable alternative to classroom based learning, but promotes physical activity – crucial when challenging the increasing problem of sedentary lifestyles. Bryn acts as advisor to the BBC and the Premier League on their education content

Ian Holmes

Ian is a former Headteacher who ensured physical activity and the related benefits sat at the heart of the school’s culture and ethos. Ian led a school that developed a vision to be an inspirational place to learn and play, and the children and staff explored a wide range of solutions (for example active breaks, active learning, outdoor play and learning) to embed this approach in school life. He is passionate about supporting schools to not only Move & Learn, but to embrace a whole systems approach to physical activity and wellbeing in order to improve physical activity habits, attitudes and behaviours moving forward. He is currently working for the University of Bradford, ensuring research and practice are brought together on the implementation of the Creating Active Schools local, regional and national programmes with his main role supporting the implementation of the Creating Active Schools framework for over 40 schools in Bradford as part of JU:MP (Sport England’s Local Delivery Pilot).

Alun Davies

After training in Physical Education at Carnegie College in Leeds, Alun has taught in Primary Education for 28 years. He spent 24 years in Leeds before relocating to Suffolk in 2018. Alun has over 20 years experience on Senior Leadership Teams and over 10 years as a head teacher. His PE background has always ensured that physical activity has a high profile within his schools. However, his wider appreciation of pupil well-being and a belief in the benefits of implementing an early years learning approach across the whole primary phase, has enabled him to lead schools that embrace a culture of active learning. Alun enjoys sharing the practical ups and downs of changing a school culture to adopt an active learning approach and the positive wider impact it has on the pupils, the main one being, they are happy and enthusiastic learners.
